In Tyrclopia, turning thirteen means joining a guild, and for most of Acules’s friends, that means a back-breaking future as a farmer or household servant. However, as the heir of Tyrclopia’s most powerful family, Acules has a prestigious future laid out for him–a future he couldn’t care less about. All Acules wants is to run off to a life of adventure in the Patroller guild with his best friend, Jade.
On the eve of his induction ceremony, Acules sneaks out of the palace in one last desperate attempt to join the Patrollers. But in doing so, he sets off a series of events that changes his life–and the destiny of the entire country–forever.
As Acules desperately tries to pick up the pieces of the lives he’s shattered–his family, his guild, the love of his life, and the very peace of the only home he’s ever known–he finds out that his own brokenness and the brokenness of his country both run much deeper than he ever could have guessed. And he’s not entirely sure he’ll be able to put it all back together.
